History, folklore and traditions in Sicily

Stenopus Greco stands on ancient Pirriers (tuff quarries in the open), just a few meters from the sea, within which the boat shelters were originally created, transformed later into dwellings for fishermen. The Phoenicians around 900 BC were the first men to extract tuff, used to erect the ancient Solunto, today Solanto, the plateau of St. Christopher. Later the Romans around 250 to C.riutilizzarono the same stone extracted from quarries to rebuild some buildings of the Hellenistic Roman Solunto placed on Mount Catalfano, splendid archaeological site, which is about 600 meters from Stenopus Greco. From here you can then make a trip unforgettable, rich in cultural and scenic emotions, as for the strategic position of the citadel, the panoramic scenery is breathtaking. For centuries after the abandonment and then the destruction at the hands of the Saracens Soluntum, these Pirriers by the sea kept for posterity the vivid imprint of human endeavor.

PIRRIERS

The Pirriers are the open pit quarries, inside of which were created by Solanto regents, the boat shelters. The architectural feature of these shelters is represented by large vaults supported by massive arches, supporting arches built exclusively with tuff blocks set. Part of arch, kept intact, is still visible in the Stenopus Greek and underlying restaurants.

ANCIENT SOLUNTO

The ancient Solunto is east from our terrace, visible in the promontory of St. Christopher with the Solanto Castle where today archaeological sites, like the furnace, and other artifacts, show us the Phoenician settlement. To the west of the terrace you can see the Roman Hellenistic city of Mount Catalfano which was founded in the fourth century BC by the Greeks of Syracuse in collaboration with the Carthaginians (Punic) during the peace treaty between Greek and Carthaginian colonies. During this period, it became the center of rivaling maritime traffic with Palermo and Mozia. Later, around 250 B.C., it came under Roman rule.

SOLANTO

Throughtout , a medieval village that is about 1 km from Stenopus Greco is visible , looking out from the hotel, along with its famous Castle, an integral part of the characteristic landscape . The regents Solanto used the ancient Pirriers , building in these quarries in shelters for boats , used for tuna fishing according to custom left by the Turks . During the period when fishing for tuna produced in the economy of the castle increasingly fruitful annuities , the fishermen at the service of the castle , who ran those buildings by permission of the regents , they built their houses on admissions . Thus was born Porticello , a charming seaside village , hamlet of Santa Flavia , which has an impressive fleet of various types of vessels , providing catch of the ' ' Mare Nostrum ' ' numerous local fish markets , regional , national and foreign .
